Simply Swiss Chard
Simply Swiss Chard
Swiss Chard is easy to grow, comes in beautiful colors and has a wonderful mild flavor. Its beauty makes it perfect for the flower beds or
to mix in with your container flowers, not just the veggie garden. Some people say it tastes like spinach or greens, but not really. Unlike greens, Swiss chard stems are tender, mild and very tasty. The green leaves have a distinct, yet mild flavor all their own. My favorite and simple method to cook Swiss chard is as follows;
Wash the greens thoroughly. Fill a large stockpot with about an inch of water. Break the Swiss chard in half or thirds, just to get it to
fit into the pot. It will cook down so cook more than you think you need. If you would like to add a bit of chopped onion, garlic or broth, it’s up to you. Depends what you’re in the mood for. I tried several combinations and they all taste good!
Cover and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. When boiling turn down to a simmer and cook until tender about 10 minutes. Drain and serve.
Serving suggestions. I like mine simply with a bit of butter and salt. My husband prefers his with a splash of malt vinegar, any vinegar will
do, and a dash of hot sauce.
Give Swiss Chard a try; it’s very nutritious and tasty. I have used the green leaf raw in salads, you can also sauté or add to soups or
stews. More recipes soon to follow.
