A walk through the winter gardens

Good morning. Yesterday, the last day of January, it was 60 degrees! Today it will be in the upper 50’s. It has been such a mild winter. Yesterday, I picked up sticks throughout the yard and bundled them up. I also trimmed back the peonies and pulled the dead and weeds from the bearded iris. Finally, I put grass seed down. Yes, that’s right, I really did. It’s the lazy way to reseed bare patches. I read to put grass seed down in February, the natural heaving of the ground will set the seed perfectly. I have been doing it for years.

Today, I may do some more weeding, trimming or clean the greenhouse and get ready for starting seeds. There is always something to do in the yard. I did take some pictures of things blooming and growing in the garden.

The snow drops are blooming as well as the Lenten rose. They have been up for weeks, I usually don’t notice them until mid February.

I went in the garden and was surprised to find arugula growing and a green of something that John gave me. John what is this? Kale?

Sage and thyme are hardy and ready for picking year round.  I don’t freeze or dry sage because it is always available in the garden. The thyme looks great all year but, I do dry some for cooking. The oregano is small but can easily be picked, the mint also looks like the oregano.

Take a walk around your yard and look for the signs of spring. You will be pleasantly surprised.
