Starting Seeds Indoors
Wow! After a winter of cold weather and record breaking snowfall… it’s sunny and 60 today! Our golden retreiver was searching for any piece of shade and wanted to go in the house, too hot. The snow is melting slowly. I can finally see my snowdrops that have been buried for over a month. Spring is truly on it’s way 🙂
Time to start those seeds. I plant them earlier than what it says on the package. Why? I have a cooler location and don’t put them under a grow light. Remember I am not a master gardener. I will continue to try, I’m struggling like most of us. When the green house is at a more steady temperature I will move them outside. Yes, I have a greenhouse! My husband bought it for a $1, that’s right, $1. He had to disassemble it and reassemble it on our property. Thank you Daddy for helping him out. It was hot and my husband was getting stung by bees. Now my father… he wore a ball cap to swat those bees – he did not get stung. It’s a small greenhouse off the back of our pool house. If you have a greenhouse… you have to start your own seeds.
I started my Japanese eggplant a few weeks ago, it says they need 12 weeks!! I should of read the back of the package years ago. No wonder mine are puny little things. I started the pepper seeds, jalapeno, cayenne and a long sweet pepper 2 weeks ago. The eggplant have emerged. I’m soaking the soil and will start my tomatoes, today.
I start them inside. Check out our nifty space saver idea for a seed starting shelf. My hubby is so creative! He’s always solving our problem with a new invention. Thanks hon.
This is what the finished product looks like. He got it at HomeDepot.
Here’s what a shelf and support pole look like. When you assemble the shelves upside-down they work perfectly for holding water and letting the soil soak up the water.
