Time to Save Basil Seed

The nights are starting to get chilly and the basil hates the cold. If there is a frost warning in your area, cover your basil with a sheet, it is the first plant to be killed by the frost. I cut the seed heads off my Thai, Lemon and Large Leaf Basil to dry and save for planting next year. I place them in separate open air containers and put them in my greenhouse to dry and wait until spring. For those of you without a greenhouse or short on space, dry the seed heads completely and then store in a paper bag, writing on the bag what it contains. Make sure they are completely dry before putting them in a bag or they will get moldy. Store the bag in a dry place for hibernation and we will start the seeds indoors next spring.
