Winter Herbs
Happy New Year and wishing you all the best in 2011! The weather is all over the place now, when our average temp for central Ohio in December is 40 degrees . New Year’s Eve it was 60 degrees here, a balmy 60 degrees! I couldn’t believe it. After a month of snow, bitter winds and the temperature below zero the snow has all melted and I can see my edible herbs in the gardens. I thought I would take a walk and look at the survivors. Take a look below and see what I mean when I say some herbs are winter hardy, it truly is amazing.
Thyme (left) and oregano (right) buried half in the snow, still ready to add to a stew or a pasta.
Cilantro (left) and parsley (right) were buried completely under the snow, looks great! Mmmm, a fresh summer tomato would be great to make a batch of salsa. I just made a slaw with the cilantro and have adding parsley to just about everything.
The sage (left) has been battered by the winter winds, she’s holding up really well. That is why I don’t freeze sage, it is available all year round. The mint (right) was buried under the snow, mojito anyone?

according to the weather report, you aren’t going to be able to see those herbs for long—–i got a message on facebook from home garden cook, but when i clicked on it, it said there was an error—go figure
i looked at the halushka recipe, grandma also put potatoes in hers—-the halushka recipe originally came from aunt frances merika
